Hi, Chinese friends. I’m Chaiwon Leem from South Korea.
First of all, I really appriciate for all you guys and I will tell you my story about this tournament.
Long time ago, at 2017’s autumn, I was about to graduate my university. For me I want to give myself spcial gift, I visited to America to attend World Chapmionships which is the biggest tournament of which I like most. (Well… some will say Stahleck is biggest but since I played other LCGs, World was biggest for me.) I was eager to meet any Koreans there at least any Asians. Finally I found some Asian guys and Adam was one of them. World is awesome but as we know it is cost-overwhelming for Asians to visit other continent. Also, I think I can’t attend anymore to go abroad far place since Korean worklife isn’t that easy. The reason why I wrote this article this much late is actually this weekend is my first weekend to take a rest after visiting China! At Worlds, I questioned to Adam if there is any Chinese tournament. Like you guys Koreans also love to attend official tournament so I asked Chinese national. But since Chinese National’s date wasn’t fine to me, I couldn’t visit China sooner. Anyway Adam and I met each other at Bangkok last September. He said there will be Chinese tournament in Guangzhou next year and I promised to attend. That’s why I saw you guys!
(Well I can’t write Chinese and (so sorry) can’t remember all you guys’ name except people who met at Bangkok but try to describe)
First day, we slept in the middle of Guangzhou. One of my co-worker friend told me Guangzhou is one of most promised land of China and I can’t agree more. Big shopping malls, skyscrappers, and lots of people! But price wasn’t that high so we were happy. Problem was almost nobody can’t speak English! We wanted to eat skewred food but clerk couldn’t speek any English. So sad. Clerk at Mcdonald’s saved us. His English was quite good and also Chinese Mcdonald’s was so good. Korean Mcdonal’s isn’t that good like yours. Double sausage burger… one of best fastfood burger I tried.
Next day (the day before tournament), Adam and his friend (the basketball guy!) picked us up and show the Guangzhou. They saved us. If they didn’t help us, we may eat Mcdonald’s every time rest of our trip. We tasted hotpot and they ride us to hotel too. Also tell us lot of story about Chian too. China is near from here but quite hard to visit too. Due to political situation, process of getting visa is difficult nowdays. Well after visiting hotel we played with some of you guys at the hotel lobby. So hyped that people gathering for one purpose. Playing Thrones. I visited America, Ireland, and Thailand for playing card games but it is always exciting to playing with new people.
Here comes to my tournament report. Some of you guys would remember that I brought Targ/Wolf. Indeed, my candidate for tournament was Tyrell/Wolf or Targ/Rains. Both were quite in good win rate. But well… I met my girlfriend at the end of November and got super bad flu around Christmas. As super-fan of thrones, I used to play Thrones every weekend but on December I almost couldn’t play Thrones. Just a week before, I think Tyrell/Wolf can’t beat renown rush (mine was Tyrell + Bolton spam) and good player know how to play around vs. Rains, so my confidence was getting low. So, why not play one of best factions (Targ) and best agenda (Wolf). But I have to admit I didn’t practiced Targ/Wolf. I did 3-3 and here goes to brief report.
R1 vs. Smile Tom L (Mirror)
Well, we both found Frozen Solid but he found his Viserys also. Board state was quite neck and neck but his double Ramsey on my YWoYD turn closed game. Skagos was his MVP. Lose.
R2 vs. King W (Stark/Fealty)
His board was good, mine was good too. But when Drogon comes out, he couldn’t find his Meera. Win.
R3 vs. Chilam L (NW/HRD)
I practiced with this type of deck. I can pretty sure that deck with no VM and if builder found Abandoned Stronghold x3 early, nobody can beat builders. My only chance was finding Flayer early but couldn’t. Lose.
R4 vs. Osscar W (Tyrell/Kraken)
Good stuff Tyrell! Drogon + Crown to Tinder Marge saved my ass. Win.
R5 vs. English Teacher! W (Lanni/Alliance)
Qohor combo deck, and my First Snow + opponent’s Supporting for Faith turn was so huge. Win.
R6 vs. Stan L (Grey/WtC)
His big Victarion blocks my Flea Bottom… Struggled and matched the board state somehow, but his can finish game with 15 powers. Lose.
Hopefully one of our Korean friend finished top 16 with his Tyrell/Summer.
Dinner after day 1 was… so good. The host guy also served the dinner and lamb pot was amazing!
I talked a lot of my country and yours. Speaking of a food again, my favorite is fried tofu.
Fried tofu is also usual food in Korea but we don’t eat bulk! Wow… I could eat fried tofu like a hippo! (lol)
Day 2, I went to tournament for the melee. I am not huge fan of non-joust, but want to join in organized play non-joust at least one time in lifetime.
I brought drowned god, tested quite a lot. Melee was fun but it will be more delightful if we had more round.
Also I saw the article about melee at your website. I was helpful.
After tournament, we went to airport but the bus was just finished. Dang-
So we decided to have dinner, and went to famous bamboo resturant. Even simple rice was so good.
Best part was the champion ‘I am No One’ bought dinner for us. It was super helpful because we didn’t exchange our money much (I didn’t expect paying hotel fee in cash :P).
Also one of you paid for us for taxi. (translation is bouns!!)
Now Febuary 11th, I finally finish my article. I opened my GJ box recently 🙁 Time is so fast.
I will end my article with some question you might want to know.
Q. Where are you playing, how many?
A. In Korea, the biggest meta is in Seoul. We usually have 3~4 players, meeting once on weekdays and once on weekend usually.
But sometimes we have 8~ players. Meta is growing!
Q. Do you have nationals?
A. Sadly nope. We even don’t have store which supports AGoT. I am trying to reach the kit provider but the connection ends.
But I hold my own events named ‘Margaery Cup’. You can check this at Jousting Pavilion.
Q. Is other cardgame Koreans playing?
A. Yugioh, MtG, and Pokemon are big 3 here too. Speaking of LCG, we play L5R and Arkham, also Netrunner.
Well, again, niced to meet you guys and I think we can meet soon. Maybe in Bangkok?
I also plan to hold some big event in Korea(maybe) too so let’s keep in touch.
